B. Academic Honesty

Students are expected to respond to academic challenges with the highest degree of integrity and honesty. When engaged in learning activities, students should demonstrate the discipline necessary to seek guidance from their instructors rather than resorting to inappropriate behaviors that may undermine their own academic and personal development. High expectations will be held for students at all levels regarding the characteristics of academic integrity. Consequences will result when this policy is violated.

C. Attendance

Frequent absences from the classroom disrupt the student’s education. Montana attendance laws and Laurel School Board policies place the responsibility of regular attendance on the student and the parent/guardian.

D. Bullying/Harrassment/Intimidation/Hazing Policy

Board Policy 3226, Bullying/Harrassment/Intimidation/Hazing is designed to provide a positive and productive learning and working environment. Bullying, harassment, intimidation, or hazing, by students, staff, or third parties, is strictly prohibited and shall not be tolerated.

E. Firearms and Weapons

Board Policy 3311. It is the policy of the Laurel School District to comply with the federal Gun Free Schools Act of 1994 and state law 20-5-202 (2), MCA, pertaining to students who bring a firearm to, or possess a firearm at, any setting that is under the control and supervision of the school district.

I. Student Photo Repository

The Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) maintains an electronic directory photograph repository of all Montana students for the exclusive purpose of locating missing school-age children. The repository provides immediate and 24/7 year-round access to a child’s school directory photograph to law enforcement should a child be reported missing. It uses current student school photos taken annually for school directories, ID cards, year books, etc.

You have the option to “opt-in” or “opt-out” when it comes to sharing your child’s photo with the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

J. Health Enhancement

The Health Enhancement, Board Policy 2335, intended to create a consistent process that will be used at every school to ensure parents are given adequate time to review materials and are notified, well in advance, of topics related to Policy #2335 that may be considered sensitive. Policy #2335 states: Health, family life, and sex education, including information about parts of the body, reproduction, and related topics, will be included in the instructional program as appropriate to grade level and course of study. An instructional approach will be developed after consultation with parents and other community representatives. Parents and guardians may ask to review materials to be used and may request that their child be excluded from human sexuality education or instruction class sessions without prejudice in accordance with Policy 3120. The District will notify parents and guardians 48 hours prior to any event, assembly, or introduction of materials for instructional use on the topic of human sexuality. Notification of parent or guardian rights under this policy will be issued on an annual basis.

I recognize it is impossible to restrict access to all controversial materials. I will not hold Laurel Public Schools responsible for materials my son, daughter, or legal dependent acquires as a result of the use of electronic communications, systems, or property from school activities. Even though the school cannot be responsible for what students do with this knowledge outside the school setting, I further understand that disciplinary action may range from a reprimand to expulsion by school authorities and be subject to local, state, federal, and international law. I hereby give my permission to Laurel Public Schools to permit my child access to electronic communications and systems, including the internet.

M. Personal Electronic Devices

We recognize that there are applications of electronic devices that can embrace learning in the classroom. However, unauthorized use of such devices disrupts the instructional program and distracts from the learning environment. Therefore, unauthorized use is grounds for confiscation of the device by school officials, including classroom teachers, custodians, and supervisory aides.

Students may use electronic devices on campus before school begins (8:00 AM) and after school ends (3:20 PM).

At no time will any student have a cell phone, iPod, or other electronic device with video capabilities in a locker room, bathroom, or other locations where such operation may violate the privacy right of another person. Students will receive an initial out-of-school supension period of up to ten (10) days.
