Homeschool Students

Laurel Public Schools recognizes the right of parents and guardians to provide a home school education in accordance with Montana law (Montana Code Annotated §20-5-109). Families who choose to homeschool are responsible for complying with all state requirements, including annual notification to the county superintendent and maintaining required educational records.

Although homeschooled students are not enrolled in Laurel Public Schools as full-time students, the district values positive partnerships with homeschooling families and is committed to providing information regarding available educational services and supports.

Child Find Responsibilities

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Laurel Public Schools has an ongoing responsibility to identify, locate, and evaluate children with suspected disabilities who reside within the district boundaries, including students who are homeschooled.

If a parent suspects that their homeschooled child may have a disability, they may request an evaluation through the Laurel Public Schools Student Services Department. The district will review the referral and follow all applicable federal and state evaluation procedures.

An evaluation does not automatically qualify a student for special education services. Eligibility is determined by an evaluation team using IDEA eligibility criteria.

Special Education Services

Students who are homeschooled may be evaluated to determine eligibility for special education under IDEA. However, eligibility for special education does not automatically entitle a homeschooled student to receive the same services available to students enrolled in public school.

Federal law requires public school districts to engage in timely and meaningful consultation with representatives of private schools and parents of parentally placed private school students. While homeschooled students are included in the district's Child Find responsibilities, the availability of services is governed by federal and state law and district policy.

If a homeschooled student enrolls in Laurel Public Schools, the student's eligibility, educational needs, and services will be reviewed by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team, and services will be provided in accordance with IDEA.

Collaboration with Families

Laurel Public Schools values collaboration with homeschooling families and encourages parents to contact the Student Services Department with questions regarding evaluations, Child Find, special education eligibility, or available educational supports.
